 Benefits

The Baton Rouge General meets the individual and family needs of nurses through an extensive benefits package that offers a broad-range of coverage and security at a highly competitive rate.

Both full-time and part-time nurses who work at least 16 hours a week enjoy coverage through the core benefits package in order to accommodate the personal needs a nurse may experience throughout their career. For benefits that contain provisions based on years of service, any nurse who has prior work history with the Baton Rouge General or the General Health System in any capacity receive their seniority credits upon hire.

Part-time nurses who have reduced their hours are not penalized in coverage or premium for making a personal choice in regards to their schedule

  • Paid Time Off – Time off is accrued based on hours worked. A nurse with a full-time schedule may expect to receive 22 days off per year. Nurses with reduced schedules may expect to receive a proportional share. The number of days earned is increased to 27 days on a Nurse’s 5th anniversary and again to 32 days off per year on their 20th. Nurses are also provided a generous annual carry-over amount of paid time off and the option to cash-out a portion at year end.

  • Comprehensive Health Plan – Individual, dual or family health insurance is available effective the first day of employment with no waiting period. The majority of health plan expenses are paid by the General and premiums are monitored and maintained at or below the market average.

  • 401(k) Retirement Plan – In recognition of a more mobile and contemporary workforce, The General offers a 401(k) investment plan where employees may make tax-deferred contributions and receive tax-deferred investment growth immediately upon hire. The hospital matches a percent of individual contributions. The company pays for administration of this portable benefit and employees have the flexibility to change investment selections and contributions along with the ability to make loans against their account.

  • Dental Insurance – The hospital offers a comprehensive dental plan which allows nurses the flexibility to elect any community dentist with 100% coverage for preventive care every 6 months with coverage rated at the 90th percentile.

  • Vision Plan – The General’s vision plan offers low co-pays for eye exams and eyeglasses, with free contact lenses at low reasonable premiums. The plan also provides for significant discounts on laser surgeries,

  • Flexible Spending Accounts – Pre-tax savings accounts are offered for both medical and dependent care expenses. These savings accounts provide nurses with the opportunity to meet spending obligations while lowering taxable income.

  • Child Development Center – The hospital offers a daycare facility adjacent to the Mid-City campus. Nurses who use the company day-care center may pay their daycare expenses in a pre-tax manner through payroll deduction.

  • Employee Clinic – The hospital offers an Employee Clinic to all employees which provides a quick & easy office visit with a Nurse Practitioner or Physician for a $10.00 per visit fee.

  • Employee Pharmacy – The General offers an Employee Pharmacy where employees may fill prescriptions at a discounted rate or purchase highly discounted over the counter medical products. This pharmacy is exclusive to employees of the General and purchases may be made through payroll deduction.

  • Short-term Disability - Nurses are eligible to purchase a portable short-term disability policy at competitive group rates. In addition to other conditions, this policy covers pregnancy and childbirth-related medical conditions.

  • Life Insurance - The hospital offers both individual and dependent life insurance coverage at competitive group rates.

  • Cancer & Specified Disease - This supplemental policy, which is guaranteed renewable for life, provides income in the event of a diagnosis of cancer or a specified disease as well as an annual wellness benefit for the payment of preventive screenings. This policy also covers the diagnosis of a family member.

  • Additional Benefits Available to Full-time Nurses

  • Tuition Reimbursement – In addition to ongoing nursing education and a 24x7 online nursing education site, The General reimburses nurses for one college courses per semester up to three semesters per year. This reimbursement is available to new nurses after six-months of service.
