| Behavioral Health Unit |
Baton Rouge Generals Behavioral Health Unit comprises both Geri-Psych and Med-Psych.
Its goal is the enhancement of every patient physical and psychological well-being.
The Geri-Psych Unit includes 18 beds and 5 RNs and treats patients 62 years and older
with a primary psychiatric diagnosis. The Med-Psych Unit contains 12 beds and 6 RNs,
treating adults with a primary medical diagnosis. On describing her unit, the unit
manager says:
"Our staff is a great staff in that they believe firmly in teamwork.
It is a relaxed fun unit to work in. We are accepting of others and
understand how difficult it can be working with patients that are mentally
challenged. Our units are also excellent places to grow because our care
is so diversified, treating medical and psychiatric problems on a daily
basis. This can be especially important if you are a person interested in
learning about psych issues but does not want to lose medical surgical skills
in the process."

The staff enhances its skills through clinical education, by assisting those
pursuing professional certification, and by motivation and teamwork.
The challenging nature of the job requires constant and focused training.
For example, all nurses undergo Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention
training.
