The Baton Rouge General Oncology nurses are known for their compassionate and
caring manner. Cancer patients, because of their recurrent visits, often form
bonds with those treating them. Because of this, Oncology nurses are among the
few that get to know their patients personally. The unit director, speaking of
working on her unit, states:
"(Our) unit is a great place to work because you can become
proficient in your skills - there are always educational opportunities
and chances to grow your expertise - and you are treated with as a
professional. We would be honored to have you in our family."

Unit nurses challenge themselves and each other. Professional development is a
key component of the units culture. For example, to help unit nurses achieve
certification; the staff has instituted an in-house educational program.
|
Also, a new nurse-mentoring program demonstrates the importance the unit places on
teamwork. New nurses are welcomed and made to feel comfortable. An experienced
preceptor devotes time to training new staff so they can gain experience and
confidence.
